asus zenfone 7, asus zenfone 7 pro official with triple flip camera, 90 Hz display | analysis, specification, and price | comparison with asus zenfone 6.
Hi guys I hope you
all are doing great. I had already given overview on asus zenfone 7 on last
blog and today, we've got the brand new ASUS ZenFone 7 Pro in the house for an
unboxing. This has been announced alongside the ZenFone 7 but there are very
minor differences, we're going to go a head and get this unboxed. And we've
also got the ZenFone6 with us so we can do a bit of a hands on comparison and
see what all of the differences are. Big seven in the middle ZenFone 7 Pro.

Now let's get to the
ZenFone 7 which I can take out the plastic and you'll see it's got a very
similar design language to the ASUS ZenFone 6. So there is this curved glass
back with a metal frame on the flip out camera module which really makes the
ZenFone unique. Now quickly bringing in theZenFone 6 for a comparison. The
first thing I do notice is that the ZenFone 7 Pro is a lot heavier, this
is around 230 grams, versus the 190 grams on the ZenFone 6. It's also larger
all around so it's taller, wider and it's thicker. And you'll see that we do
have a larger flip camera module and that is because we now have three
cameras instead of the two on the ZenFone 6. You will notice that
theZenFone 7 Pro does have more of a two tone finish for this aurora black
compared to the flat color of the ZenFone 6. The ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro are also
available in a pass to white color. And as with the ZenFone 6 because of the
flip camera mechanism, we do not have any water or dust resistance. You'll also
see that we have a fingerprint scanner on the back of the ZenFone6, on the
ZenFone 7 and the 7 Pro it is now here on the side. And this also doubles up as
a power button as well as a smart key, so you can assign it to do a few
different actions, if you double press it, or if you press and hold, you can
get it to open a particular app or Google Assistant or something like that.
Now let's take a
look at the front, so they do look relatively similar, I would say that the
ZenFone 6 does have more of a chin compared to the 7 and the 7 Pro. And we also
have an AMOLED display this year, which is larger, it's 6.67 inches,
versus the 6.4 inch display that we've got on the ZenFone 6. Resolution is
still full HD plus, so we do get a slightly lower pixel density compared to the
ZenFone 6, but that's not really something that's going to matter. And we now
have 890 Hertz refresh rate compared to the 60 Hertz that we had on the
ZenFone 6. This also has a one millisecond response time with 200 Hertz touch
sampling rate. so it does feel very smooth.
Triple rear camera
flip mechanism:
Now let's talk about
what's very unique about the ZenFone series and that is that flip up camera.
This is something that I've not really seen on any other smartphone. And this
means that you can have the same rear facing cameras for the front as well. And
you can see that it pops up here. Now it's supposed to be faster compared to
the ZenFone 6, so let's just quickly test this out. Yep, definitely does pop
out faster. Try that again. Yep, ASUS are also saying that it can hold up to
40% more weight. So when it is flipped out, if you try to kind of pull it
towards the screen, it's going to be able to take pressure up to around 35 kgs.
I'm not going to try this out here, I do not do durability, I'll wait for Zack
to test out the durability of this camera module. But one thing that we did
have before that we also have now is that it will automatically retract if you
drop your phone so that way it is going to protect it. ASUS have also said that
this is good for over 200,000 flips, so that's an average of 100 flips a day
for five years. So this really shouldn't be a problem. The ZenFone 6 has been fine
for me over the years. so I'm confident that this is going to be absolutely
fine as well.
Now let's talk about
these cameras. So last year we just had a primary camera and an ultra wide
camera. This year we have a primary, an ultrawide as well as a telephoto
camera. The primary camera is a 64-megapixel camera with an f/1.8
aperture. Now on the ZenFone 7 Pro this does have optical image stabilization.
On the ZenFone 7 regular there is no OIS there is only EIS. We then have an
ultrawide camera which is 12-megapixels and it has around a 113degree
angle of view. This is not as wide as what we had on the ZenFone 6 which was
around 125 degrees but we do have dual face detection auto focus on the ultrawide
camera. As well as the ability to take macro shots from the ultrawide camera at
12-megapixels or so. You can get right up and close with this same ultrawide
camera. And finally there is the 8-megapixel telephoto camera which is
going to give you upto three times optical zoom. And this also has optical image
stabilization on the 7 Pro, not the 7. Now for video we have up to 8K at 30
frames a second. What's really interesting is that because we're using the same
cameras on the rear,as well as on the front, that does mean that you can get 8K
video recording from the front facing cameras on the ZenFone 7 Pro. And I
believe this is the only smartphone where you can have front facing video at
8K. Not sure why you'd want to record 8K video for your face and highlight
all the imperfections. But hey, there's also 4K adds up to 120 frames a second
1080p add up to 240 frames asecond and 720p add up to 480 frames a second. Once
again these frame rates are all available not only for the rear, but also for
the front. So I can definitely see situations where maybe you want to mount the
smartphone somewhere, but you still want to see it for framing purposes. And
you'll still be ableto get that high quality for the front facing shots, whether
that's images or video as you would do for the rear. And I think that's a big,
big advantage for the ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro.
Now let's talk about
the internals. So the ZenFone 7 Pro ispowered by the latest and greatest Qualcomm
Snapdragon 865 Plus chipset, up to 256 gigabytes of UFS 3.1 storage,
and 8 gigabytes of LPDDR5 RAM. The ZenFone 7 is going to be powered by
the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 not the Plus. So it's still going to be high up
there in terms of performance, but it's not going to be as high as the 7 Pro.
Once again, you do get UFS 3.1 storage, as well as LPDDR5 RAM, but you do get
half the storage. so it's 128 gigabytesand the RAM also starts at 6 gigabytes.
Now that's quite an upgrade compared to the ZenFone 6 which had the 855. And
also for the RAM and the storage, the ZenFone 6 has UFS 2.1 storage as well as
LPDDR4 RAM, so speed and performance, the ZenFone 7 Pro and the ZenFone 7 right
up there with the competition. Now as with the ZenFone6, the 7 and 7 Pro do
have a triple slot so you canhave two SIM cards active at the same time and also
have a microSD card. so you can expand the storage. Traditionally on many of
the smartphones you either have to choose with one SIM card and one microSD
card or two SIM cards, with the ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro, you can have all three
which is really cool. But one of the things that you don't get on the ZenFone 7
and 7 Pro is a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. This is something that you did of
course have on the ZenFone 6. We do you have stereo speakers there is one on
the earpiece and there is one bottom firing. And for the battery we do once
again have a massive 5000 milliamp battery, this is the same size as the
ZenFone 6 and if the ZenFone 6 is anything to go by, this is going to last you
all day long, maybe even up to two days for some people that is a big, big
battery. But on the ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro this time you do get 30 watt
charging, which is up from 18 watts on the ZenFone 6, so that's about a 40%
improvement. You can get from 0% to 60% in around 34 minutes, or from 0% to
100% in around 93 minutes. However, unfortunately there is no wireless
charging. This is something that I wish the ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro did have but I
guess because this has such a large battery we can let ASUS off a little bit.
And there are lots of battery care features. We've got a custom charging limit
so you can start charging out round 90% or 80%. The slow charging 2.0 which
will limit the charge to around 10 watts for less battery wear and 34% lower
temperature during charging. And we've also got scheduled charging, so you can
schedule your charge to go all the way just before you wake up, for instance.
And all of these things are going to help with preserving the battery for a
longer period of time. So if you are planning on keeping this for a few years,
these battery care features are going to be very beneficial.
Now for the software
we do have Android 10 with Zen UI 7 on top. I actually really liked ZenUI and
it's come quite a long way compared to what it used to be. ASUS has really
taken feedback on board and made it really clean and minimal. And this time we
also have Game Genie, which is something that we find on the original phone,
and this will display information such as your frame rate, your temperature
when you are gaming.
finally, for pricing
the only information I've been given as yet is for the Taiwanese pricing so the
ZenFone 7 Pro is going to be coming in at around NT$28,000. And the ZenFone 7
is going to be coming in at around NT$22,000. I'll let you go a head and do
some conversions. And as soon as I've got UK and European pricing, I will drop
that down in the description below.
Now summarize the
differences between the ZenFone 7 and the ZenFone 7 Pro, you're getting the 865
Plus you're getting more storage, more RAM. And you're also getting optical
image stabilization on the primary and the telephoto camera, or as you're
getting electronic image stabilization only on the ZenFone 7 so not a huge
difference. I think it's really going to come down to performance. If you are
somebody who isgoing to be gaming a lot and you do want the best of the best,
then the ZenFone 7 Pro is probably going to be the better option. And looking
at the pricing compared to what the ZenFone 6 came in at these are comingin
quite a bit higher. Will you be picking up the ASUS ZenFone 7 or 7 Pro? Do let
me know in the comments below and do let me know what other coverage you'd like
me to do with the ZenFone 7 and 7 Pro. I hope you enjoyed this blog and found
